About OneWorld Solar: the Oldest Solar Company in the Southeast

Founded in 2001, out of business by 2017, and rebuilt from zero revenue into a $7.8M commercial solar EPC contractor. This is who does the work.

How OneWorld Solar got here

OneWorld was founded in 2001 as a residential and light commercial solar installer, back when very few companies in the Southeast were doing either. By 2017 it had gone out of business.

Doug Baird acquired it in October 2017 and rebuilt it around a different customer: businesses that measure their power bill in tens of thousands of dollars a month. In the years since, revenue has gone from zero to $7.8 million in 2024, we have served more than 300 customers, and we have installed over 7.8 MW for commercial solar and battery clients — including the 1.267 MW rooftop array and 55,000 lb of battery storage at the Samsonite and TUMI distribution center in Vidalia, Georgia.

Along the way the company was awarded a patent for solar racking in 2020 and a second patent in 2025. We design and build with our own racking, which is unusual for a contractor of this size and is the reason we can commit to a roof detail rather than defer to whatever a supplier ships.

OneWorld Solar is a disabled veteran-owned business. That is not a marketing line — it reflects how the company is run and who runs it.

What we actually do

We are a commercial solar EPC contractor: engineering, procurement and construction under one contract. Alongside solar we build three-phase hybrid battery storage, micro-grids and power factor correction, and we manufacture our own BatteryCube® storage cabinets.

Our work concentrates in Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina and the Caribbean.

Doug Baird acquired OneWorld in October 2017 and rebuilt it into a commercial solar EPC doing $7.8M a year. He holds two solar racking patents (2020 and 2025) and is a disabled U.S. Army combat engineer officer and Gulf War veteran.

Before solar, Doug acquired eight telecommunications companies over ten years and founded SwiftTel Communications, a Georgia statewide telephone company running five Sonus GSX 9000 class 4/5 switch colocations on an OC-12 fiber backbone. He sold it in 2007, then co-founded the world’s first cloud-based video conferencing company; the software and intellectual property are now owned by Cisco.

Chris Sandifer has designed and interconnected medium- and high-voltage renewable generation since 1992. He is a Professional Engineer in six states, a NABCEP board-certified Photovoltaic System Inspector, and a North Carolina Licensed Electrical Contractor with the Unlimited Classification.

Chris vets sites for interconnection compatibility and congestion constraints before design starts, produces preliminary layouts, interconnection technical data and single-line diagrams, and carries the utility review through to the witness test. He reviews the technical and incentive content published on this site.

Giving back

Mike Reynolds was seriously injured in Iraq by an IED. OneWorld Solar donated a 10 kW solar system to Mike and his family.

Doug Baird is himself a disabled U.S. Army combat engineer officer and a Gulf War veteran. Supporting wounded service members is not a campaign here; it is something the company does because of who runs it.
